Meet Dr. Solomon Jacob, PhD
Dr. Solomon Jacob, PhD, was born and raised in Bombay (present-day Mumbai), India. From an early age, he developed a deep love for reading and learning, encouraged by his uncle who promised to buy him any books he could carry out of the store—a tradition Dr. Jacob later passed down to his twin daughters, Majah and Sarah. It was during these bookstore visits that he first discovered Scientific American, sparking a lifelong fascination with science.
Dr. Jacob pursued his undergraduate education in chemical engineering at the Department of Chemical Technology at India’s Bombay University, where he earned top honors, including a rare score of 7 on the SSE (Secondary School Examination)—the highest in his class. In 1966–1967, he co-developed a predictive financial model called CompuStock with friend Wayne Shultz, using historical market data to forecast stock trends—an early indication of his analytical prowess.
In 1967, Dr. Jacob was awarded the prestigious Walter P. Murphy Fellowship to attend graduate school at Northwestern University. With just $7 in hand, he emigrated to the United States and quickly distinguished himself, completing both his master’s degree and PhD in chemical engineering in a remarkable 2.75 years. His academic journey was made possible through mentorship and support, particularly from Dr. Joshua Dranoff, who also facilitated his wife Rita’s arrival and citizenship.
Over a decades-long career, Dr. Jacob contributed significantly to the fields of photochemical and petroleum refining research, earning 17 patents along the way. But his scientific curiosity didn’t end there.
One starlit evening on the water with his family inspired a new direction—cosmology. Fascinated by the mysteries of the universe, Dr. Jacob began to explore theories about the Big Bang, black holes, and dark energy. Encouraged by his grandson Bodhi, he began writing down the equations he had been developing in his head. What he discovered surprised even him: the solutions aligned closely with modern understanding of the universe, including the distribution of dark matter and dark energy.
This intellectual journey culminated in his groundbreaking book, After the Big Bang Could Come the BIG CRUNCH, in which Dr. Jacob proposes an alternative Newtonian-based perspective on the universe’s evolution, challenging the prevailing Einsteinian framework. His work invites readers to think boldly and explore new possibilities in cosmological theory.
